Bees

The bee population is in trouble, and it’s up to us to restore their natural habitat and encourage them to reenter our farms and valleys. Without bees, we wouldn’t have access to amazing herbs or delicious lavender. We need the bees and their pollinating powers!

Unfortunately, the bee population has been disappearing at an alarming rate with Colony Collapse Disorder spreading from hive to hive, and causing bees to mysteriously abandon their own homes to die. Even though the bee population is beginning to bounce back, the bees still need our help.

The reason for Colony Collapse Disorder is complicated and varies depending on the region. However, scientists do know that there are four main contributors: pesticides, poor nutrition, parasites and stress caused from climate changes and relocation.

How Selle Valley is Helping

Becoming A Certified Bee Friendly Farm: we’re partnering with Pollinators.org to achieve a Bee-Friendly Farm Certification, which helps us to preserve and protect the pollinator populations by implementing positive changes at Selle Valley Lavender Farm. These changes include offering nutrition and habitats for bees, and integrated pest management strategies.

1% For the Bees: you may have heard of the international movement called “1% for the Planet” – they’re an organization whose members contribute at least one percent of their annual sales to environmental causes. We’re taking a page out of their book and donating 1% directly to the bees via Pollinator.org and their international bee health programs.
